Walkthrough for Linksys WRT54G Series Routers on Thu Sep 11, 2008 7:44 pm
Before I go any further let me begin by HIGHLY recommending that you upgrade the routers firmware. Not only is it relatively painless to accomplish but it will definantly save any heartaches in the future. To do this click here and follow the instructions.
These instructions are for Linksys WRT54G, and WRT54GS routers, all versions, assuming your firmware is upgraded.
All three methods of opening your NAT will require that you access the routers setup page. To do this, open a new internet browser window and type the Router IP Address 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. In the rare case that this address does not work please message me and I will guide you further, but for the majority of linksys users this is the correct address.
Next you will be prompted to enter your User Name and Password. The default user name for your WRT54G series router is going to be one of two things, "admin" or it will be blank. Try one and if it doesn't work it is the other. The default password for all WRT54G series routers is "admin". If you changed your user name and/or password and can't remember them, Hold the reset button on the unit for 30 seconds or more and the router will be restored to factory defaults. This also means that your configuration will be set to factory defaults also, so if your router is configured for your ISP you may loose your connection until you set the unit up again. The default password for the router is admin in lower case letters. Be warned, resetting your router means EVERYTHING is reset to factory defaults.
With the router setup page opened, the first and easiest way to open your NAT is to enable the UPnP function. To do this simply click on the Administration blade, scroll down, and click the box marked enable . Next click the save settings button at the bottom of the page and wait to be returned to the setup screen, this should only take a few seconds. Now go power up the allmighty gaming machine known as XBOX 360 and test your XBOX Live settings. After the test is complete if your NAT is open have fun gaming. If not continue below.
**note: I do not know the specific reason for this but some WRT54G Series routers UPnP option is not compatible with XBOX Live. I suspect that it is due to the myriad of processor/bios/firmware combinations out there for these routers. Regardless this is not the death knell of your Live adventure
The next two options will require you to setup your XBOX 360 with a Static IP Address. To do this go here. The only thing you do not have to do is call your ISP for the DNS numbers. Simply access your routers setup page and click the Status blade. Scroll down and you should see DNS 1 , and DNS 2 . Those are the numbers you will need for the Primary and Secondary DNS numbers.
Also, when choosing your Static IP Address if you go to the Setup blade under Basic Setup , scroll down and you should see Starting IP Address . Choose a number after the last period that is one less than the number displayed and you will have no problems. Example: If Starting IP Address is 192.168.1.100 than your Static IP Address should be 192.168.1.99. Anything lower than 100 for the last digits would be ok as long as you dont go below 2.
**note: Before continuing with the second method for opening your NAT, it is absolutely critical that you go back to the routers setup page under Administration and disable the UPnP function, then save your settings. If you do not, the next two methods WILL NOT work.
The second and most time consuming method for opening your NAT is Port Forwarding. To do this open your routers setup page and click the Applications & Gaming blade then make sure you have selected Port Range Forward NOT Port Triggering . Port Triggering would do you no good anyways.
Now at the top of the chart from left to right you will see Application, Start, End, Protocol, IP Address, and the Enable block. In the first row, under Application , leave it blank. In the next two columns, Start and End , enter the number 88. Under the next column Protocol , click the drop down bar and select the option UDP . In the next column, IP Address , enter the same number that you entered in your XBOX 360 for the Static IP Address. In the next column check the Enable box.
In the next row you are going to leave Application blank again. Under Start and End , enter the number 3074. Under Protocol , select Both if it is not allready the default option. Under IP Address enter the same IP Address as the first row. Then once again check the Enable box. Next click the save settings button at the bottom of the page and wait to be returned to the setup screen, this should only take a few seconds. After this is complete retry your XBOX Live Test. If it is successfull, Game on Gamer! If not continue below.
**note: The DMZ method is the easier of the two Static IP Address options by far but comes at the increased (but unlikely) risk of someone hacking your XBOX 360 while it is connected to the internet due to the way this option works. DMZ simply forwards all the ports at the same time to one device, even the ports the device (XBOX 360) doesn't need.
For this method I erased all the information that I had put in for the Port Forwarding method. Although I am not sure this is required I would do it anyways just to take one more thing that could go wrong out of the equation, and don't forget to save your settings!!
For the DMZ method, go to the routers setup page under the Applications & Gaming blade and select the DMZ header. Now click the Enable box and then input your XBOX 360's Static IP Address into the block marked DMZ Host IP Address (only that last set of digits should be required). Next click the save settings button at the bottom of the page and wait to be returned to the setup screen, this should only take a few seconds. Last, go try that Damn XBOX Live test again.
Hopefully this worked for you. If it did not, please contact me and let me know what is happening so I can ensure that I did not make a critical mistake and hopefully help you through it. Also if you find something thing that is more than negligeably different than I have written it above, contact me at smashreeb80@hotmail.com .
